செல்வத்தின் உண்மை வடிவம்

பலர் மூங்கிலை வெறுமனே ஒரு பயிராகவே கருதுகின்றனர். அது, ஒரு மருத்துவமனையை வெறும் கட்டிடம் என்று அழைப்பதைப் போன்றது.

தொழில்நுட்ப ரீதியாக சரியானது. அடிப்படையில் முழுமையற்றது.

மூங்கில் ஒரே நேரத்தில் பல சூழலியல் பணிகளைச் செய்கிறது. அது சரிவுகளை நிலைப்படுத்துகிறது. ஆற்றங்கரைகளை நிலைநிறுத்துகிறது. நீர் வழிந்தோடலைக் குறைக்கிறது. நீர் ஊடுருவலை மேம்படுத்துகிறது. இது நிலத்தடி நீரை நிரப்புகிறது. இது பல்லுயிர்ப் பெருக்கத்தைப் பாதுகாக்கிறது. இது கார்பனைச் சேமிக்கிறது. இது வருமானத்தை ஈட்டித் தருகிறது.

மிகச் சில தாவரங்களே சுற்றுச்சூழல் சேவைகளையும் பொருளாதார மதிப்பையும் ஒருங்கே வழங்குகின்றன.

நன்கு வளர்ந்த மூங்கில் தோப்பானது, தனக்குக் கீழே உள்ள நீர்நிலைப் பகுதியைத் தொடர்ந்து பாதுகாப்பதோடு, ஒவ்வொரு ஆண்டும் சந்தைப்படுத்தக்கூடிய மூங்கில் கம்பங்களையும் உற்பத்தி செய்யும் திறன் கொண்டது. இயற்கை இது போன்ற பல்துறை வணிக மாதிரிகளை அரிதாகவே வழங்குகிறது.

நதிகளில் எழுதப்பட்ட சான்றுகள்

உலகம் முழுவதும், ஓடைகள் மற்றும் நீர்ப்பிடிப்புப் பகுதிகளின் ஓரமாக மூங்கிலைப் பாதுகாத்த சமூகங்கள், வறண்ட காலங்களில் பெரும்பாலும் நிலையான நீர் விநியோகத்தைத் தக்கவைத்துக் கொண்டன. மேட்டு நிலங்கள் அடர்ந்த தாவரங்களாலும் மூங்கில்களாலும் மூடப்பட்டிருந்த காலத்தில், ஆண்டு முழுவதும் ஓடிக்கொண்டிருந்த நீரூற்றுகளை வயதான முதியவர்கள் இன்றும் நினைவுகூர்கிறார்கள்.

பிறகு நிலம் சீரமைக்கப்பட்டது. பிறகு மண் அரிப்பு ஏற்பட்டது. பிறகு வந்தது தண்ணீர் பற்றாக்குறை. அதன்பிறகு, இயற்கை முன்பு இலவசமாகக் கையாண்ட பிரச்சனைகளைத் தீர்க்க விலையுயர்ந்த உள்கட்டமைப்புத் திட்டங்கள் கொண்டு வரப்பட்டன. இயற்கை அமைப்புகளை அழித்துவிட்டு, பின்னர் அவற்றை மீண்டும் உருவாக்குவதற்காகத் தனக்குத்தானே பெரும் தொகையைச் செலவு செய்துகொள்வதில் மனிதகுலம் ஒரு வியக்கத்தக்க திறமையைக் கொண்டுள்ளது.

விவசாயிகளுக்கு இதன் பொருள் என்ன?

ஒரு பண்ணையில் உள்ள ஒவ்வொரு முதிர்ந்த மூங்கில் கூட்டமும் நிலத்தடி நீரைச் செறிவூட்டும் நிலையமாகச் செயல்படுகிறது. ஒவ்வொரு வேர்க்கிழங்கு வலையமைப்பும் மழைநீரை நிலத்தடிக்குக் கொண்டு செல்கிறது. மூங்கில் சருகுகளின் ஒவ்வொரு அடுக்கானதும் நீர் ஊடுருவும் திறனை அதிகரிக்கிறது. சரிவுகள், ஓடைக்கரைகள் மற்றும் நீர்ப்பிடிப்புப் பகுதிகளில் இருந்து மூங்கிலை அகற்றுவது, நிலப்பரப்பின் தோற்றத்தை மட்டும் மாற்றுவது இல்லை. அது நிலத்தின் நீரியல் அமைப்பை மாற்றுகிறது. நீர் எங்கு செல்கிறது என்பதை அது மாற்றுகிறது. நீர் எவ்வளவு காலம் தங்கியிருக்கும் என்பதை அது மாற்றுகிறது. வருங்கால சந்ததியினர் நீரூற்றுகளைப் பெறுவார்களா அல்லது வறண்ட ஓடைப் படுகைகளைப் பெறுவார்களா என்பதையும் அது மாற்றுகிறது.

தண்ணீரின் பொருளாதாரம்

மூங்கில் தொழில் பெரும்பாலும் கம்பங்கள், கட்டில்/நாற்காலி, பலகைகள், கரி, ஜவுளி, கார்பன் வரவுகள் ஆகியவற்றின் அடிப்படையில் விவாதிக்கப்படுகிறது.

அவை அனைத்தும் முக்கியமானவை.

ஆனால் மூங்கிலின் மிகவும் குறைத்து மதிப்பிடப்பட்ட பொருள் தண்ணீர்தான். புட்டித் தண்ணீர் அல்ல. சுத்திகரிக்கப்பட்ட தண்ணீர் அல்ல. நிலத்தடி நீர். அது நம் காலடியில் புதைந்துள்ள கண்ணுக்குப் புலப்படாத செல்வம்.

ஒரு மூங்கில் தோட்டம் வெறும் தண்டுகளை மட்டும் வளர்ப்பதில்லை. அது மீள்திறனை வளர்க்கிறது. அது நிலத்தடி நீர் செறிவூட்டலை வளர்க்கிறது. அது வறட்சிப் பாதுகாப்பை வளர்க்கிறது. அது வெள்ளத் தணிப்பை வளர்க்கிறது. அது எதிர்கால நீர் பாதுகாப்பை வளர்க்கிறது. பலர் மூங்கிலை மூலப்பொருட்களின் ஆதாரமாகக் கருதுகின்றனர்.

மூங்கிலை ஒரே நேரத்தில் இரண்டு பொருட்களை உற்பத்தி செய்யும் ஒரு தொழிற்சாலையாகக் காண்பதே விவேகமான பார்வை: பூமிக்கு மேலே, செழிப்பு. பூமிக்குக் கீழே, நீர்.

மேலும், காலநிலை நிச்சயமற்ற தன்மையால், ஒரு காலகட்டத்தில், இரண்டுமே சம மதிப்பு வாய்ந்தவையாக மாறக்கூடும். மூங்கில் காடு அதன் மேற்பரப்பில் நீரைத் தேக்கி வைப்பதில்லை. அது அதை பூமிக்கடியில் அனுப்புகிறது. அங்கே அது நிலைத்திருக்கிறது. அங்கே நீரூற்றுகள் பிறக்கின்றன. அங்கே ஆறுகள் கோடையைத் தாங்கி உயிர் வாழ்கின்றன. மழை நின்ற பிறகும் சமூகங்கள் உயிர் பெறும் இடம்.

ஒருவேளை, அதுதான் மூங்கில் நமக்குக் கற்பிக்கும் மாபெரும் பாடம்:

செல்வத்தின் உண்மையான வடிவங்கள் பெரும்பாலும் நம்மால் உடனடியாகக் காண முடியாதவையாகவே இருக்கின்றன.

Bamboo species that only flowers once a century currently in bloom in Belgium

Of the 20 seedlings of tiger bamboo variety planted as an experiment in 1987 Belgium Bokrijk Open-Air Museum, one grew better than the rest and have flowered now (this variety flowers once in 50-100 years)

Many experts then were sceptical about this variety surviving the harsh belgian winter. Today they are doing successful carbon sequestration (One hectare of bamboo sequesters 17 tonnes of CO₂ annually)

Bamboo Flowering in Wayanad

Bamboo is flowering in Wayanad region, again!

As per the above article, bamboo flowering is happening this year in Wayanad forests. And the flowering is currently happening in the sathyamangalam forests too.

Ironically, bamboo flowering has happened just 10 years back in the same region (in 2011). Normally, the flowering cycle ranges from 25 years to 60 years for the species of this region. Hence, it'd be interesting to understand the species that's in bloom then and now and do a research on its history and behavior.

an indigenous action worth applauding

With design infusion from INDE (Integrated Design), the below structure was built by a group of young men from the organization PUNARCHITH, led by a Solega Sri Mahadeva. The work was undertaken as part of an initiative called 'Angarika Maala' (a land restoration program with a long term perspective) in Putanpura village (15 kms from Chamarajanagar town). The structure is meant to house plant nursery raised as part of the land restoration activity.

Day 04 - 14 May 2017

The morning session went in collecting of materials - 40mm and 20mm jally, cement, 8mm steel cage, Alum for fungal cleaning, cut granite stones. And second half of the day was spent in segregation of the bamboo poles and choosing the right ones for structural components.

Day 3 - 07 May 2017

With limited human resource (just the 2 of us), we finished the foundation pit digging (upto 21"-23"). And as usual, planted a sapling of Angustifolia and watered all the plants. After work is done, it rained nicely!!

Day 2 - 01 May 2017

Dug few more pits for foundation. Thanks to the Rain God, digging was made easier. A simple tool like spade and crowbar demands such attention in its utilization and maintenance. Learing about the tools and efficient utilization of them is very important in today's mechanized world. We also planted another Bamboo sapling at the premises. Another satisfying day at work!

After an hour of debate, we arrived at a consensus on the plan and structural design of the Demo unit to be built at BDC. A 9' x 14' rectangular structure that's simple and aesthetically appealing. Will send the proposed structure details shortly.

The 30th April and 1st May weekend is earmarked for starting the foundation work. And hoping to finish the structure in a period of 2 months by working over the weekends.

Apart from Bamboo poles, the following materials and tools are getting organized:

PVC pipes (8-10" dia 3 to 4 feet long) for foundation work
Lime (a few bags)
Cement (a few bags) - Idea is to experiment and compare side by side
Binding wires
Bamboo splitters
Cutting and Grinding machines
Hole saw - all sizes
Machete
Chicken mesh
Nails, nuts and bolts
